Course Introduction
The PhD program in Leisure Management is designed to cultivate professional talents in scientific research. Taking advantage of the development of Macao as a leisure city, we can help doctoral students inspire their creative thinking. Students will master research methods and analytical skills for professional practical research and improve their ability for them in research. In addition, students will have a broad global vision and a certain level of originality theoretically and practically.

Course Description
Theories and Concepts of Leisure Management (3 credits)
The subject will familiarize students more extensively with the contemporary issues with leisure activities. Students will gain an understanding of the historical, theories and concepts of leisure. Understand how it contributes to the social sciences and humanities field.
Strategic Management in Leisure and Recreation (3 credits)
Strategy management is the process of developing and executing strategies to ensure an organization achieves its goals. It involves setting objectives, analyzing the organizational environment, developing strategies, tracking progress, and making adjustments when necessary. This course will aim to investigate skills and apply to leisure and recreation studies. Make use of real-life examples and deliver strategic skills in applying to different business sectors. After completion, students gain knowledge of the application of strategic skills and wider their horizons.
Research Method (3 credits)
This course will present the scientific method within the context of leisure management study. Advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods will be discussed. Research techniques and methods will be examined for the formulation of hypotheses, development of testable objectives, experimental design, subject selection, data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and report preparation. After completion, students will be able to conduct statistical analyses of data and interpret the results of the analyses; conclude the research, and assess the generalizability of study results.
Marketing in Recreation Management (3 credits)
The course is to strengthen students of marketing management in the recreation business. The essential elements of marketing strategy and formulate marketing strategy in the recreation sector in the global and domestic marketplace. Apply advanced marketing skills in facilitating recreation organization branding, customer relationship management, and other tools in cultivating long-term customer relationships. Upon completion, students will be able to apply strategies marketing and tactical marketing in contemporary environments.
Quality in Leisure Management (3 credits)
Quality is regarded as a vital component of every organization and will continue to remain important for improving organizational performance and achieving competitive advantage in a service organization. Therefore, the focus of this course will be to expose the students to the various leisure sectors in the contemporary quality management principles, practices, and tools to enhance their skills and abilities to identify, analyze, and understand the impacts of quality management systems in leisure organizations. After completion, students will know how to create service design and performance monitoring and create a company quality culture.
Recreation and Festival Events (3 credits)
In the past decades, recreation and festival events have emerged as significant tools for destination and regional development and promotion of leisure and tourism management. The steady growth in the number of sizes and festival events creates a demand for professionals. Furthermore, increasing complexity and government regulation of festival events. The aims of the course will provide knowledge and know-how in crafting festival events and facilitating recreation development. Students will be trained and skills in the practice of international festival and entertainment management.
Sustainable Leisure Management (3 credits)
The subject aims to explore how to sustainably manage leisure and recreation facilities considering economic, social, and environmental factors. This program aims to provide knowledge with responsible leadership skills in the field of sustainable hospitality management. Key topics include product design, ethical issues, sustainable benchmarking, green product marketing, low-carbon solutions, food management, and environmental management systems which are recommended to create a sustainability approach. Upon completion, students will gain solid knowledge about sustainable issues in managing leisure business.
Integrative Health and Wellness (3 credits)
Subjects will examine the fundamental concepts of integrative health and wellness, including the history, philosophies, and methods of prominent integrative therapies. Various case studies will discuss and blending with theories and concepts how these approaches function to affect health are examined. Contemporary trends in different components of the major area of health and wellness will be discussed.
Recreation Management (3 credits)
The subject will cover extensive knowledge and understanding of the emerging trends of leisure and recreation. Awareness of management practice and problems of leisure and recreation. Through the case analysis understand leisure and recreation governance, structure and delivery systems, income generation for organization, and policy frameworks that underpin leisure and recreation organization. Upon completion, students gain knowledge of understanding in operation, risk management, and sponsorship delivery.
Leisure Psychology (3 credits)
Leisure activities are positive activities, identified psychologically by particular sets of behaviors and sociologically by their place in a leisure social world and often in a social institution (e.g. sport, art, entertainment). This subject offers a historical, theoretical, and empirical foundation of psychological constructs related to social behavior in leisure and recreation, sports, and tourism settings. Focus on attitudinal, social, and motivational theories as applied to leisure–related context.
Dissertation (30 credits)
Dissertation topic selection should be under supervisor's supervision, the topic selection should relate to Leisure Management issues and be based on student's interest and experience
Degree Requirements
1. After completing and passing the core courses from table 1, and elective courses from table 2 and 3, and get a total of 15 credits, students must start writing the thesis proposal. Students can continue their dissertation research and write upon completion of the thesis proposal defense. 2. The doctoral students should publish a level 2 journal paper during their study period (high IF publication is encouraged). Macau University of Science and Technology should be the first and sole author affiliation. Doctoral students must be the first author second author or corresponding author of the paper. In addition, the topic should be related to dissertation or research scope. 3. Dissertation completed in Chinese should have a word count of no less than 80,000 words; If the dissertation is written in English, at least 200 pages or at least 50,000 words is required. 4. Students who pass the thesis defense and publish the thesis as required can apply according to the doctoral degree application procedures of Macau University of Science and Technology and be awarded a doctoral degree in leisure management.
Learning Time
1. The duration for taking all courses is 12 months and the duration for dissertation composition is 24 months. 2. In general, classes will be arranged Monday to Friday, day and night time.
Qualifications of Graduation
Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Doctoral Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has: 1. Completed and met the requirements as prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation); 2. Abided by the regulations of the University; 3. Cleared all charges and returned all University’s property and equipment borrowed.
